Course Overview

This course is an in-depth study of current Risk Management principles and best practice, in direct relation to issues of compliance and the ongoing maintenance of one or more Management Standards. It will assist those with management or audit responsibility for; one or more standards, the development and implementation of operational plans, the identification and management of business risk.

Competency Outcomes & Associated Courses

Participants who choose to submit their class activities for assessment on successful completion will be issued with a Certificate of Attainment covering the following competencies under the ASQA frameworks:

  • BSBRSK501B Manage risk
  • BSBMGT515A Manage operational plan
  • BSBWOR501A Manage personal work priorities

Diploma Pathway: This course combined with the competencies obtained from one of our management systems courses (QMS, EMS, SMS or FSMS) plus our Lead Auditor (AUTL), will result in a Nationally Accredited Diploma of Management for successful candidates.

Participants who choose not to submit their class activities for assessment will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance. Formal competency assessment criteria will be covered during the course and are available by request from training@ncsi.com.au

Attendance & Pre-requisite Guidelines

Completion of a two day management system course (QMS, EMS, FMS, SMS), plus the three day Auditor / Lead Auditor program is highly recommended as a prerequisite for attendance and effective contribution at this program. This course is designed for:

  • Managers and Auditors at all levels who wish to extend their knowledge and skills in the field of managing risk and developing and implementing associated operational plans
  • Those wishing to gain units toward a Diploma qualification

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this course participants will be able to :

  • Develop an operational plan with detailed implementation and monitoring
  • Include corrective audit actions in operational planning (eg CARs)
  • Establish appropriate risk-related KPIs and contingency plans
  • Demonstrate knowledge of models and methods for operational planning
  • Identify alternative approaches to improving resource usage and eliminating inefficiencies and waste
  • Identify business systems that support operational performance
  • Apply AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 Risk Management- Principles and Guidelines
  • Apply problem solving and innovation to identify practical ways to manage identified risks within an organisational context
  • Develop a risk management plan

Course Outline

This course covers the following topics. (Note; time is included for discussion of common best practice)

Managing Risk

  • AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 Risk Management - Principles and Guidelines (for further information, click here)
  • Risk concepts including tolerable risk
  • Risk management planning, including stakeholder analysis, explanation of the risk context, critical success factors, identified and analysed risks, risk tolerance, treatments for prioritised risks and monitoring arrangements
  • Evaluating the risk management plan’s efficacy in treating risks
  • Linking auditing function to the organisations risk management processes
  • Assist others to develop risk management plans to identify/manage non-conformance

Reporting Risk

  • Methods to continually improve risk management reporting and recording
  • Conveying the importance of risk and near miss reporting across the workplace

Developing and Implementing Operational Plans

  • The role of an organisations strategic direction in operational planning
  • Approaches to operational planning
  • Building buy-in through stakeholder identification and involvement
  • Using a SWOT and PESTE analysis to inform planning
  • Including corrective actions in operational planning
  • Incorporating management review into the business planning process (build it in; not bolt it on)

Planning and Managing Resources

  • Monitoring resource usage and eliminating resource inefficiencies and waste
  • Develop and implement strategies to ensure that physical and human resources and services are acquired in accordance with the relevant organisational policies

Monitoring and Reviewing Operational Performance

  • Develop and implement contingency plans at appropriate stages of operational planning and review
  • Develop, monitor and review performance systems and processes to assess progress in achieving profit and productivity plans and targets
  • Identify areas of underperformance, recommend solutions, and take prompt action to rectify the situation
  • Support individuals and teams to effectively, economically and safely use resources

The course includes a number of practical activities including role plays, cases studies, group discussions and team exercises that are used to assess the competence of participants against competency requirements.
