Corporate Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change Survey 2011: Report (Published April 2012)
Australian corporations now face a paradigm shift resulting from societal concerns about environmental sustainability and government policies dealing with climate change. These issues are gaining sufficient prominence in corporate conversations to warrant their inclusion in governance and risk management processes.
Corporate leaders and mangers are now exercising their minds on the business impacts of climate change responses. Important questions being asked are:
- Are we prepared for a carbon-constrained future?
- How will the carbon tax and emissions trading impact us?
- Are our operations energy and carbon efficient?
- What are the risks and opportunities for our business?
These important issues may determine whether companies thrive, or survive, in a carbon-limited economy.
This industry survey conducted by NCS International looks at current Australian corporate practices and aspirations concerning environmental sustainability and climate change. We hope it will help encourage positive corporate action on climate change, energy efficiency and sustainability.
This 2011 Corporate Environmental Sustainability & Climate Change Governance Survey is an NCS International initiative aimed at Australian senior and executive corporate managers. Its objective is to promote better understanding of prevailing trends in business sustainability and climate change responses.
The survey attracted over 100 organisations that represented 22 industry sectors (see the Appendix for further information on the respondents). It elicited responses on a range of issues related to sustainability governance and climate change actions within diverse Australian businesses. In particular, the survey explored:
- sustainability governance arrangements
- business systems to monitor performance
- transparency and disclosure
- energy and carbon risk management
- supply chain sustainability
- corporate drivers for sustainability
This report follows the Corporate Sustainability summary distributed in November 2011 and provides more detail on the results from the survey.
