AS/NZS 4801 Safety certification means contracts – are you missing out on serious business?

If your business is involved in building, construction, engineering or project management, then you know that Occupational Health and Safety is serious business. That’s why more and more of Australia’s top building and construction companies are becoming registered with the Australian Government Building and Construction OHS Accreditation Scheme.

Companies whose occupational health and safety management systems are certified by an independent third party can apply for accreditation under the Federal Safety Commission Scheme (FSC).  Accredited organisations are listed on the approved FSC Register and can bid for Australian Government contracts worth $3 million and above as the principal contractor. http://www.fsc.gov.au/ofsc/Theaccreditationscheme/

A new requirement for doing Australian Government business

This new $3 million threshold followed amendments to the Building and Construction Industry Improvement Act 2007.  Other, indirectly funded Australian Government projects also attract the requirement for FSC registration when undertaking projects.

The NCS International OHS program: laying the foundations for success in six easy steps

1. Application for certification. This includes receiving a formal confirmation that your business has made a formal commitment to achieve certification that is valid for use in tender and similar documents.
2. A gap analysis (optional). This is a cost effective means of establishing where your organisation currently stands in relation to the standard: where it is already compliant and where more work may be required. This offers vital information that can be used for planning, resourcing and
developing an effective and compliant OHS system.
3. Application of NCSI’s Self Assessment Checklist. This is an invaluable tool available that NCSI can make available to you for free of charge. The checklist enables you to further establish its compliance or otherwise to the relevant standard. It can work as a good progress measure and help
establish your readiness for the next stage.
4. Pre-Assessment Audit. A brief onsite audit to assess the relevance of systems documentation to company activities and initial systems. The next stage is when NCS International’s OHS specialists conduct the certification audit.
5. Certification Audit. A full assessment of your OHS system and implementation. If your organisation is successful and have satisfied the requirements of the Standard, a certificate will be issued.
6. Apply for registration to the FSC’s approved Register.  Once certified by NCS International to the appropriate OHS Standard, your organisation is then in a position to apply for Accreditation under the Scheme. Your organisation’s existing certified OHS management system should offer all of documentation and practical evidence of compliance
required by the Scheme. The Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner may choose to conduct additional on-site assessments before providing accreditation under the FSC.
