Northern Sydney Institute presented with ISO 14001 Certificates

TAFE NSW – Northern Sydney Institute (NSI) Director, Kevin Harris, College staff and NCS International (NCSI) Pty Ltd CEO, Greg Jewson recently attended a ISO14001 certificate presentation at NSI’s North Sydney College.

The ISO14001 certification follows NCSI’s completion of 18 external audits of teaching sections and operational units with significant risk to the environment.

As part of NSI’s commitment to reducing its negative environmental  impact, an 8.61% reduction in energy use was achieved in 2008/09 on 2004(Baseline) levels, saving 1415 tonnes of GHG emissions. Potable water use was reduced by 34% on 2004 levels through water efficiencies and harvesting rainwater

In November 2009, NSI won the inaugural National Training Award for Skills in Sustainability, and earlier received an inaugural Bronze Partnership with the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change and Water’s (DECCW) Sustainability Advantage program.

A fantastic year for NSI, the Green with ENV-E e-learning for environmental responsibility program, contextualised for Local Government also won the Environmental Education Award from the ‘Keep Australia Beautiful’ campaign in August 2009.

NCS International CEO Greg Jewson praised NSI’s commitment to implementing sustainability principles.

“NSI’s achievement of international standards for environmental management has a had a multiplier effect that enables long term change for sustainability by its influence on students, staff, workplaces and supply chains,” he said.

Kathy Rankin, TAFE General Manager, Training and Educational Support introduced 2010 as the Department of Education and Training’s year of learning for sustainability, stating that NSI had developed sustainability skills by demonstrating how to embed sustainability principles into their training programs and every day operations.

NSI’s Green Skills staff training program is strategically optimistic and aims for confident staff who can educate individuals and enterprises towards sustainable livelihoods and communities.
